Weather, Site Accessibility, and Other Considerations

The workshop will be based in Columbus, Ohio. We will visit the Ohio History Center in Columbus, and the landmark sites Fort Ancient, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, Serpent Mound, and the Newark Earthworks.

Please note that the program schedule includes significant amounts of walking and standing, including a 2.5 mile interpretative trail at the Hopewell Mound Group and some light hiking at Serpent Mound. Comfortable walking shoes suitable for wet grass are recommended.

Due to the site-based nature of the program, Summer Scholars will spend significant periods of time (most of the day on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) outdoors in areas that are not sheltered from the sun or rain. Typical weather for central Ohio in July varies from the mid-70s to the mid-90s, and humidity is to be expected. Given the outdoor nature of the sites we’ll be visiting, there is a possibility of encountering hazardous plants such as poison ivy, and insects such as mosquitoes or chiggers.

Note that these weather forecasts are “live” and will change as the National Weather Service updates forecasts for the area in question. It is recommended to check the forecast as close to departure time as possible.
